Chapter Twenty-Six

She kept the outfit she decided upon after debating if it worked or not as she felt she would be dressed the way she felt when she looked in her mirror.

Taking an hour or two before she had to leave the next day, Bess showered, took care of shaving everything which needed to be shaved, dressed in the outfit she picked out yesterday, and caught a cab to Mira's home at the gallery.

Once she buzzed Mira's apartment and was let in, Bess waiting outside of the front door after she knocked. Seeing the door open, Bess looked at Mira, taking in the black cocktail dress Mira wore underneath the cooks apron which kept the dress from getting covered with whatever Mira cooked in the kitchen.

The smells of chicken, and other scents roasting in the kitchen washed over Bess as she stepped inside.

"Hi, Mira. Whatever you're cooking smells wonderful."

"Hi, Bess. Thank you. I'm glad you like the smell of the roasted chicken."

"I do, Mira."

Taking Bess' coat from her, Mira hung it up on the rack next to do the door and turned back to look at Bess. "Would you like wine? Everything needs about another half-hour to finish, so I thought we could sit and talk until the chicken was done."

"I'd like a glass, Mira."

Taking the half full glass of the Merlot Mira poured for her, Bess stood at the edge of the two rooms which made up the kitchen and dining room. Sipping at the wine, Bess saw Mira watching her, causing Bess to smile at the way the older woman looked at her with such an interesting look.

When she swallowed the liquid she drank, Bess asked, "Mira?"

Mira's expression changed from the interesting gaze she gave Bess to one of amusement and mirth. "I don't know if I can explain to you what I was thinking."

Smiling back at Mira now, Bess shook her head with a short light movement before she said, "Try?"

Bess was curious, seeing the way Mira's eyes filled with the amusement and mirth which brought out Mira's smile. "I guess I can..."

"You're stalling, Mira."

"I am, true. It's because I don't know if I want to tell you what I was thinking."

Filling her own features with the amusement she felt Bess saw how flustered Mira was. "Come on. Tell me what you thought made you smile the way smiled and how the thought lit up your eyes so they looked like they sparkled."

Taking a drink from her glass of wine to give her another way to delay telling Bess what the younger woman pushed her to reveal, Mira watched Bess from where Mira stood looking at Bess. "All right. Stop pushing. Since you insist I tell you. I was admiring the outfit you wore tonight and the way your lips pressed against the glass as you tasted the wine."

Standing there dumb-founded, Bess held onto the stem of the wine glass and stared at Mira with an astonished gaze to her face while her mouth hung open slightly from the same feeling which came over Bess as she heard what Mira said.
